Unemployed Black Woman Pretends to be White, Job Offers Suddenly Skyrocket


If you don’t believe that racism in the job market is real, then please read this article by Yolanda Spivey.  Spivey, who was seeking work in the insurance industry, found that she wasn’t getting any job offers.  But as an experiment, she changed her name to Bianca White, to see if employers would respond differently.  You’ll be shocked and amazed by her phenomenal story.

  1. That’s interesting, but not a huge surprise. I probably won’t fill out that diversity questionnaire at the end anymore. They assure you that they don’t use it in their hiring decisions, but I guess that’s not the case.

    Something else: When I was getting financed for my house, I saw on my paperwork that my race was listed as ‘white’ when I went to sign my forms. I guess I didn’t sound ‘black’ on the phone so they presumed I was white. I sometimes wonder if I would’ve gotten the loan if they had known I was black. Maybe. My credit was great….you just never know though.

    • They use it, otherwise they wouldn’t ask you for it. People can argue that it’s 2012 but that means nothing. Racism is still there they just hide it better.
